Wayback Wednesday - Popculture Nostalgia - Sky Dancers
Launched in 1994/95, these toys were weapons disguised as dolls. They had foam wings permanently attached to their arms and their feet were molded together into a base needed to spin and launch them into the air.
I had a couple of these as a kid. They were fun for a few seconds as their actual “sky dancing/flying” purpose but they almost always were used as projectiles. Aiming them at each other/your friends and ripping on that cord to make wicked air battles was a hell of a lot more fun than just watching them fly straight up.
And that’s pretty much all they were good for. You couldn’t use them like the rest of your Barbies because they couldn’t really move. So you fought with them. … which probably goes a long way to explaining why they were recalled.
In one memorable incident, a friend and I were trying to see who could launch their sky dancer higher. Unfortunately, we were doing this in doors and it ended in a shattered lamp shade that sent glass raining down on us. No one was hurt and it definitely didn’t make us stop, but still.
The only other way we played with them was throwing the dolls away and using these bases as props in other games.
This moon one, for instance, could come in handy when you needed something to pass for a moon wand when pretending to be Sailor Moon. Not that I’ve ever done that, of course…
